Fury… War Is Definitely Fucked Up

Fury

The gruesome story of the end days of World War 2

This 2014 film had a star studded cast that featured Brad Pitt, Shia Lebeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and John Bernthal. It was directed and written by David Ayer.

Fury takes place in the final days of WW2 in 1945. Brad Pitt played Don ‘ Wardaddy’ Collier, the man in charge of the tank, FURY. Shia LeBeouf played Boyd ‘Bible’ Swon, the religious gunner. Michael Peña played Trini ‘Gordo’ Garcia, the tank driver, and John Bernthal played Grady ‘Coon-Ass’ Travis. Logan Lerman was newcomer Norman Ellison recently assigned to tank FURY.

The movie begins as single man on horseback crosses a what appears to be a battlefield. The remains of tanks scatter the ground, fires burn all around the debris. Just then out of no where, Wardaddy jumps out and kills the German soldier on the horse. The Allies are making their final push on Germany and Wardaddy commands a five man crew assigned to a Sherman tank nicknamed Fury. The crew of Fury is repairing the tank and trying to overcome the loss of one of their men. Once they repair their tank, the group returns to the base where Norman is assigned to replace a dead man in Wardaddy’s crew. His first task is to clean out the remains of the man he is replacing. Wardaddy and the rest of the soldiers show aggression when an SS Nazi soldier is walked through the camp. Coon-ass shows Norman how to use his weapon and where his spot is on tank. They set off on a dangerous and potentially deadly mission behind enemy lines. An early mistake by Norman leads to Allied soldiers being killed, and Wardaddy does not take it likely. Now with no commanding officers left in tank column, Wardaddy takes charge and they meet up with Baker Company. Wardaddy is assigned to a rescue mission, and prepare the tank column for the mission. The mission is going well until a machine gun nest opens fire on the column; that is followed by anti-tank weapons. All hell breaks lose as they approach a tree-line heavily fortified with Nazi defenses. This is Norman first warfare experience and he is slow again firing on the Nazis. After the battle, American soldiers find a Nazi and Wardaddy sees it as an opportunity.

Things begin to change for Norman after Wardaddy forces him to kill a Nazi by shooting him in the back. Even though he does not want to do it, this changes him from the innocent boy he was when he was assigned to Fury’s crew. Next the group is instructed to take a town and the Allies move through it check every around every corner for Nazis. Soon after the tanks take the town, the soldiers seek out anything thing they can find from the comforts of food and wine to that of women. Wardaddy takes Norman and they find two young german girls in an apartment building. They all hang out and Norman ends up having sex with one of the girls. Wardaddy has the other prepare some food. The four are about to sit down for a meal, the group is interrupted by Coon-Ass, Gordo, and Bible barging in on the occasion. After a rude and awkward altercation the group leaves the apartment. As the are preparing to roll out in their tanks, an airstrike hits the village and destroys the building the girls had lived in, killing the girls in the process. Now having lost something he loved, Norman is a changed man on the warpath. After an assault leaves Fury as the sole tank left standing, Wardaddy and his crew must continue on and to fight the Germans. When a land-mine takes out the tank’s track, the men of Fury are left stranded and with a decision to make. Do they flee back to behind Allied lines? Or do they stay with Fury and defend against the advancing Nazi force? Will any of them survive to see this war come to an end?

Fury is a gruesome and violent World War 2 movie. I enjoyed watching this 134 minute film. As a former history major, historical fiction especially around the WW2 era always interest me. This film does a good job of showing and simulating the complexities of tank warfare. What it was like to live next to four other men in a metal box for days on end. When the movie begins Norman is as green as it gets when it comes to soldiers, as it progresses we see the evolution of a soldier and man throughout his time served in the war. I give Fury a four out of five stars. This is a definite watch if you are at all interested in World War 2 or tank warfare. Brad Pitt kills it again as a leader of a bunch of Nazi killing badasses, and the rest of the cast does good as well.
