Time for another old school action classic.
Soldier starred Kurt Russell, Jason Scott Lee, and Jason Isaacs. It was directed by Paul Anderson and written by David Webb Peoples.
Soldier takes place in a future where the soldiers are trained from birth to be ultimate soldiers. Kurt Russell played Todd 3465, one of these soldiers who has been raised from birth to be a killing machine. Jason Scott Lee played Caine 607, a genetically engineered soldier. Jason Isaacs played Colonel Mekum, who was in-charge of the group.
The movie begins with Todd and his troop-mates being put through training as children to become soldiers. They are forced to watch horrible and violent things. If they don’t keep up with training, they are killed off. Todd emerges as the leader of these super soldiers. Him and his group become very good at what they do. The squad fights successfully in multiple wars, but a new group of superior genetically engineered soldiers lead by Caine 607 is brought forward and beats the old soldiers. After losing to Caine in a fight, Todd is thought dead and is thrown in with the trash. He is taken to a disposal planet and is dropped with the rest of the garbage.
After being found by crash survivors and nursed back to health, Todd is forced to join this community of survivors and become a part of a society. After befriending some of the survivors and their children, Todd has to learn not to be a soldier so that the group will not view him as a threat. As he copts with being a normal person and function within a society, Colonel Mekum prepares Caine and the other super soldiers for a mission to eliminate the crash survivors. When Mekum and the soldiers arrive and start attacking the group, it is up to Todd to fight what he was once apart of, in order, to protect the community he has become apart of. The fallen soldier they did not want becomes the only hope they have for survival.
I do enjoy this movie despite the fact Kurt Russell says a whooping total of 104 words. It is a typical action from the 90’s with big explosions and massive amounts of bullets being expended. Kurt Russell does a good job of portraying a man who has never shown emotion and kills without mercy. This is an interesting concept for an action movie, it involves redemption, resurrection, and second chances. Todd must find out what he truly believes in when no one is giving him orders and survival is his only objective. I give this one a two and half stars out of five. It is a good entertaining watch. If you are a fan of 90’s action movies definitely give this one a chance.
