Lucy
Well that was a mid morning mind fuck.
Lucy came out in 2014. It starred Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, and Min-sik Choi. Written and directed by Luc Besson.
The movie takes place in what is present day Asia and Europe. Lucy is played by Scarlett Johansson. Morgan Freeman played Professor Norman, who studied the abilities of the brain and neurons. Min-sik Choi played Mr. Jang, a mafia boss.
Lucy begins with the character Lucy being talked into delivering a package. Once she turns her friend down, he handcuffs her to the briefcase forcing her to do it. She goes into a building and at the reception asks for Mr. Jang. There is taken away by a group of very large men, after she sees her friend get shot outside. As she starts to freak out a group of large men grab her and force her onto the elevator. She arrives at Mr. Jang’s room where upon entering she sees a couple of twitching legs that indicate some dying bodies. Everyone in the room is speaking Chinese, which she does not understand. After they force her to open the case and make sure it is not a bomb, Mr. Jang has his men test the contents of the bag on a druggie which they then kill him. Lucy is then offered a job and knocked unconscious. Professor Norman is giving a conference on neurons and cerebral capacity to scholars and students in Paris. When Lucy wakes up, she has bandages around her stomach where she has been cut open and had contents from the case put inside her. An english speaking gentleman then appears and addresses Lucy and three others about their current situation. That situation is each has had a small package of drugs put inside them and is suppose to return to their countries and deliver the drugs back to Mr. Jang’s people. However in transport to the airport, Lucy is held with some men who beat her and kick her stomach. Now these CPH4 drugs are running through Lucy’s body and blend with her cells.
When Lucy wakes up, she has begun to start accessing more of her brain. She soon escapes from her captors and is on the run. Lucy hijacks a cab and forces him to take her to the hospital. After having doctors remove the drugs that are inside her. She finds out about Professor Norman’s research and heads to Paris to meet him. As she continues to unlock more of her brain, Lucy can control electrical and radio waves, other people, and even matter. She asks Professor Norman what she should do with all the knowledge she is obtaining and he suggest she shares it. Along the way she instructs a french police officer working in France to pick up the other people carrying the drugs. She discovers that she will need all of them to survive as long as she can. As the police start picking up the drug mules, Mr. Jang’s men begin notifying him of the problem. Lucy and the cop fly across town to meet with the other mules and get the packets. After taking the packets from Mr. Jang’s men, Lucy heads to meet Professor Norman at the university. She unknowingly leads Mr. Jang and his men there as well. With time becoming a issue, Lucy must unveil her knowledge of the universe to Professor Norman and his colleagues. Will Lucy be able to tell all her secrets before Mr. Jang and his goons show up to take back the drugs? Can she help Professor Norman to better understand neurons and cerebral capacity? Will Lucy be able to access 100% of her brain and if so what will happen?
This is a movie that really makes you think. I like the concept of the story and think they did a good a job of telling it. Lucy discusses ideas that make you look at mankind and our existence in a different light. If you like Scarlett Johansson, then check this one out. She’s not as kick-ass as she is in Marvel’s movies, but she is still a bad-ass. Morgan Freeman puts on a good performance as well. This 89 minute movie is a good action/adventure film mixed with some psychological ideas. I give this one a three and a half out of five stars. It’s an entertaining watch and keeps your attention throughout.
