Get Hard: A Rich Asshole’s Attempt To Prepare for Prison

Get Hard

This 2015 movie had two of the biggest names in comedy, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, as its leads. It was directed by Etan Cohen. Also starred Craig T. Nelson, Alison Brie, and Tip “T.I.” Harris.

Get Hard is a comedy that takes place in present day Los Angeles. Will Ferrell played James King, a millionaire hedge fund manager who is sentenced to prison time for fraud at San Quentin. Which happens to be one of the toughest maximum security prisons in California. Knowing this, James King seeks the help of Darnell Lewis, a parking garage carwash owner played by Kevin Hart. James assumes Darnell has been to jail based on statistics about African-american males, and with Darnell needing money to put a downpayment on his family’s new house takes advantage of the situation.

The movie begins with James King breaking down in tears. It then changes to a month before at James King’s lavish and excessive Bel Air mansion, showing off his wealth. This is when we met Allissa, James’s fiancée played by Alison Brie. She is a spare no expense type of women, who wants their life to be as extravagant as possible.  James heads into his job, where he works for Allisa’s dad Martin, played by Craig T. Nelson. Darnell arrives at his work as well, which just so happens is the carwash in the parking garage of James King’s office building. After a misunderstanding, Darnell attempts to fool James for the money he needs with an unlimited car wash pass. James quickly answers no and shows of his wealth with the rest of his answer. James and Allisa are entertaining their friends and family for an engagement party, when the FBI bust in and arrest James in front of everyone. Turning down a good plea deal in hopes that he will be proven innocent, James takes his case to court. Instead the judge sentences him to a ten year sentence at San Quentin, a maximum security prison.  After Allisa leaves him, James is left with no one to turn to. Darnell discovers James napping in the trunk of his car. During their conversation, James makes the assumption that Darnell has been to prison and asks him to teach him how to survive in prison. Darnell literally turns James’s mansion into a simulated prison environment. While training James to survive prison seem to be an impossible task, Darnell tries to convince James to learn to give a good blow job. Once James realizes there’s no way he is going to become gay to survive prison. He begins to train harder than he ever has before. Darnell still unsure of James’s progress attempts to link James up with his cousin Russell, played by T.I, and his gang the Crenshaw Kings. With time running out before the prison sentence begins and Darnell realizing James might be innocent. The two start to try and solve the mystery that put James in this predicament. Can James and Darnell figure out who framed James? Will James be ready for prison if he has to go? Do the Crenshaw Kings accept James into their gang?

This 100 minute movie was a good afternoon watch. It has a decent story with great comedic moments throughout. Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell play off each other well in this story of class struggle, misunderstanding, and a clash of cultures. If you are a fan of either of these two definitely give this one a watch. It is by no means Will Ferrell or Kevin Hart’s best movie but it is a pretty funny. I give this one three and a half stars out of five. Get Hard is a good movie typical comedy with good laughs   I enjoyed this movie and would not mind seeing these two again in another.
