The LEGO Movie: Everything Is Awesome Or So They Say…

The LEGO Movie

This was an instant classic released in 2014. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It had a very star studded cast including, Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson, and Nick Offerman to name a few. This movie is full of guest appearances from some of your favorite movie and historical characters, all in Lego form of course.

This storyline revolves around a normal, everyday construction worker named Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt. Emmet is just a normal guy with nothing too special about him. He exists in a world run by President Business, voiced by Will Ferrell. President Business requires everyone to follow instructions and has brainwashed most of the Lego inhabitants. However, in this Lego world exists what are known as Master Builders, these are the Legos that do not follow the instructions and rebel against President Business. Viturvius, voiced by Morgan Freeman, is the leader of the Master Builders. WyldStyle, voiced by Elizabeth Banks, is the Master Builder who discovers Emmet and enlists his help against President Business. They are aided in their fight by Lego Batman, voiced by Will Arnett, Benny, an 80’s Spaceman Lego voiced by Charlie Day, Metal Beard, a Lego Pirate voiced by Nick Offerman, and many more famous Lego heroes.

The movie begins with Lord Business, the other name for the tyrant that is President Business, securing an artifact know as the Kragle. After he finds it and blinds Viturvius, Viturvius tells a prophecy about the piece or resistance and a Lego called The Special. He will be the greatest, most important person of all time and will lead a noble army to save the realm. Then we meet Emmet, the most normal, un-extraordinary Lego to exist. Emmet is a construction worker who lives his life by the book. He follows all the instructions to a T in an attempt to fit and be well liked. After a day at work, he unsuccessfully attempts to make friends and be apart of something, but as his co-workers ignore him; his instructions get blown away . As Emmet changes them down, he sees WyldStyle in the construction site. Knowing she is not allowed to be there, Emmet starts to contact someone then falls down a shaft that leaves him in an unknown place with an object that mesmerizes him. After touching the object, Emmet blacks out and finds himself in an interrogation room with Good/Bad Cop, voiced by Liam Neeson. Emmet then realizes the piece he touched is permanently attached to his back.  Lord Business’s plan to freeze all of the inhabitants of the Lego world in their place and the piece of resistance on Emmet’s back is the only thing that can stop him. WyldStyle comes to his rescue but during their escape she realizes Emmet is not only not the Special but he is not even a Master Builder. Now with Lord Business’s army hot on their trail, WyldStyle and Emmet must find Viturvius and convince the rest of the Master Builders to join them in the fight to save their world. Will Emmet and WyldStyle find Viturvius in time? Can they stop Lord Business’s plot to freeze the world? Is Emmet really The Special?

I loved this movie from the first time I saw it in theaters with friends. I will not lie either, I had to be convinced to see this movie. I thought I would not like it, but I’m pretty sure I was laughing harder and enjoyed this film more than my friends. The humor in it is great and if you grew up playing with Legos then this is a must see. Chris Pratt and the rest of the cast do a great job in this 100 minute animated instant classic. Will Arnett as Lego Batman might have been my second favorite performance. I give this movie a five out of five. It was one of my favorite movies from 2014. The LEGO Movie has moments that will have you laughing your ass off and moments that might make you shed a tear. This might be my favorite animated movie of recent years.
