Alien vs Predator: The Ultimate Rivalry

AVP: Alien vs Predator

This morning I watched a movie that combined to iconic creature in Hollywood Cinema History, Alien and Predator. Unfortunately, no Schwarzenegger in this Predator movie. In fact, this film shows the Predators in a different light.

AVP was made in 2004 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It starred Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, and Lance Hendriksen.

In Alien vs Predator, the setting is a deserted island off the coast of Antartica where an ancient pyramid has been discovered. Charles Weyland, played by Lance Hendriksen, assembles a team of explorers, scientist, archeologists, and mercenaries. The team is headed by Alexa Woods, ice explorer played by Sanaa Lahan, and with no time to prepare them she has her hands full. Not that any training she could have put her team through would have prepared them for what was about to happen.

The movie opens in space with what appears to be a Predator ship in space that activates the pyramid. We meet Alexa Woods as she is climbing up a frozen waterfall where one of Weyland’s employees convince her to come on the mission. Weyland brings the group together on a ice breaking tanker of the coast of Antartica. He then proceeds to tell everyone about the mission at hand. With what could be the discovery of the first pyramid ever built on Earth, the race to reach it before another team begins. However, when the group arrives at the dig site a large tunnel has already been cut to the pyramid with no sign of who cut it. Weyland’s team proceeds and rappels down the tunnel toward the find. Once they reach the bottom, the pyramid is larger than they imagined and might be one of the most important discoveries in recent history. Sebastian De Rosa, played by Raoul Bova, translates an inscription on the wall that says, “Only the chosen may enter.” Shortly after the group comes across a sacrificial chamber, the only thing is the bodies all have their ribs broken out not in as would be typical for a heart ripping out sacrifice. Things get weirder when in the next room the team discovers next generation type weapons which one scientist put as equivalent to finding Moses’s DVD collection. When members make the mistake of taking these weapons out of their case, they trigger the beginning of a game they could have never imagined. Members of the group begin vanishing and Aliens begin appearing. The predators arrive late and are not prepared as they should be when the fighting erupts. Now with the group scattered and two different species a big ass monsters running around, the exploration team is left with no choice but to try and escape this ancient battleground. Will anyone from the expedition team survive? Can the Predators get their weapons and stop the Alien infestation from reaching the surface?

Now as a fan of history, this movie is entertaining in the fact that it takes historically theories and beliefs and combines them with two of the most badass ruthless monsters in Hollywood. This movie is full of action as members of the team fight to survive both the Predator hunting team and the Alien horde. I enjoy this film it’s a good combination of the Alien and Predator franchises. I give this a three and a half out of five as it’s definitely worth at least one watch if you were a fan of either franchise. This one is only 101 minutes and it story moves at a decent pace the whole time. Check it out to find out what happens and the rest of the backstory to the Alien and Predator battle.
