A Fish Called Wanda
A Fish Called Wanda is a classic comedy with a perverted twist. The story of a robbery and a love triangle or two. This 1988 film was directed by Charles Crichton and written by John Cleese. It starred John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin.
The movie takes place in what at the time is present day London. The main storyline involves a group of four people that have come together to steal 20 million in diamonds. When one of them is captured and is the only one with the location of the diamonds, they others must convince the attorney representing him into telling them where the loot is hidden.
The movie opens with Archie Leach, an attorney played by John Cleese, is closing a case. George Thomason, played by Tom Georgeson, organizes the group consisting of Otto played by Kevin Kline, Ken played by Michael Palin, and Wanda played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Wanda is George’s girlfriend, Ken is his flatmate, and Otto is her brother or so they told the rest of the team. Otto and Wanda are really conspiring against George and Ken to take the loot out from under them. George is arrested but was able move the diamonds before taken into custody. When Wanda and Otto return to the place where the loot was originally hidden, they find an empty safe and have no idea where it was moved too. Wanda pretends to become interested in the case in order to get close to Archie, George’s attorney. She plans to use Archie to find out information, and then run off with Otto once they have the diamonds. When Wanda starts to fall for Archie as well, the love triangle grows and now she is romantically involved with George, Otto, Archie, and even kisses the stuttering sidekick Ken. When things become complicated and Ken is ordered to kill the only witness, there becomes a rush to find the jewels. Will the jewels be found? Can Ken kill? Who will Wanda end up with?
I first watched this movie with my grandma and mom growing up as they loved A Fish Called Wanda. This an old school action comedy for sure. If you are a John Cleese or Jamie Lee Curtis fan then this is a must watch. This is an entertaining and interesting 108 minute film is a great story about a heist gone wrong and the attempt to recover the loot. I give this movie four out of five stars. Full of deceit and lies this is film shows what one woman will do to get what see wants because after all Wanda is the one playing all of them.
