22 Bullets
The movie was directed by Richard Berry and starred Jean Reno, Kad Merad, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, and Marina Föis.
Yes, this movie is in french and there are subtitles, but this is one I did not mind reading for.
An action packed film based on the true story of Charlie Mattei, a french mob boss played by Jean Reno, was shot 22 times in an attempt on his life. Charlie Mattei has recently retired from a life of organized crime and wanted to just spend time with his family. However, there is no peacefully retirement for former mob bosses.
The movie begins with Charlie Mattei enjoying time with his son. Shortly after dropping his son off, Mattei drives into a garage and parks. As he is getting out of his car, an eight man hit squad pulls up and jumps out of two cars. They pump Mattei full of 22 bullets. He is rushed into emergency surgery, immediately after being attempt on his life. Mattei survives the attack and no wonders who would have ordered a hit on him. Mattei’s attorney, Martin Beaudinard, played by Jean-Pierre Darroussin, and some of Mattei’s closest men vow to find out what happened. Kad Merad plays Tony Zacchia, one of Mattei’s oldest friends and now a current mob boss, who visits Mattei in the hospital and swears to bring the men to justice who attempted the hit. After finding out some disturbing news and the murder of one of his men, Mattei decides to take things into his own hands. He begins to find his attackers one by one and exact his own vengeance. However, his son is kidnapped and becomes collateral for him to turn himself in. With tensions on high, what will Mattei do? Can he rescue his son and avenge the killing of his man? Will he be able to find the man who put the hit on him?
22 Bullets is a foreign action film that keeps the story moving. This is not the fast paced kung fu action movie that most people think of when they want to watch foreign action movies. 22 Bullets was made by the same people who did the Taken Trilogy with Liam Neeson, and the feel of the movie is definitely similar. This is a good entertaining film that tells a true story of betrayal, attempted murder, and revenge. I give 22 Bullets three and a half out of five stars. It’s a good watch but it’s not the best movie I have ever seen.
