Secret Window this morning it is.
A psychological thriller that pits Mort Rainey, an author played by Johnny Depp, against John Shooter, played by John Turturro. It was directed and written by David Koepp and based on Stephen King’s novel Secret Window, Secret Garden.
While going through a divorce, Mort Rainey is accused of plagiarism by John Shooter, a seemingly crazy diary farmer from Mississippi. He now must prove that he wrote the story first. Mort claims his story was published first and believes the prove is in a magazine at his old house. However while waiting to be proven wrong, Shooter starts antagonizing Mort and the people closest to him. As things become more violent and crazy Mort fights to understand what is happening and prove his innocence at the same time.
The movie opens with Mort in his car and all you can here is the windshield wipers and car going. He starts trying to convince himself to leave and not go in the hotel room he is parked in front of. Mort runs inside to discover his wife, played by Maria Bello, in bed with another man, played by Timothy Hutton. This starts the breakdown of the author Mort Rainey. He suffers through events that tear him apart emotionally and mentally. Throughout this movie Shooter begins to do things that change the course of Mort’s life. He must figure out how to deal with this nuance while navigating his way through a divorce and dealing with his ex-wife’s lover. He employs a special security service who has helped him before with a similar problems. This only makes things more complicated however. Can Mort find this old magazine and prove his innocence? And if he does will Shooter leave willing and admit to the crimes he has committed?
This movie is a psychological thriller that is entertaining from start to finish. Johnny Depp plays his character magnificently. As an audience you see a man who struggles on the brink of losing his mind because of the dramatic events he has been put through. At only 96 minutes this film is an quick and entertaining watch. It will make you question what you think you know about people and realize everyone might not be who they seem. I give this one a four out of five star rating. If you know nothing about the story going into there will be a pleasant surprise twist at the end for you. With an ending that will leaving you cringing while wanting more, this movie is worth the watch.
“You know, the only thing that matters is the ending. It’s the most important part of the story… the ending. And this one… is a very good. This one is perfect.” – Mort Rainey
